As is often said at the moment, we are living in unprecedented times. Trying to contain Coronavirus has led to drastic, but necessary measures to try to halt its spread. Retail and Distribution workers are on the frontline and the GMB wants to ensure that members health, safety and welfare is protected. We want the business to survive and we want team members pay to be protected.
We welcome the company’s announcement that they will not be implementing changes to sick pay in April. We trust that before any future changes take place there will be constructive talks with GMB.
h, we had a constructive conference call to discuss the company’s latest Coronavirus plans and we put forward the feedback and views of GMB members. These points included concerns from store and DC team members about the need for hand sanitiser, regular breaks from the tills to wash hands, card only payments, reduced opening hours, abuse of team members and social distancing.
All these have become ever more important following the announcement of stricter stay at home and social distancing measures by the government. Wilko has been told that it can open and we will be pushing for strict social distancing and hygiene measures to be put in place. The health, safety and welfare of team members is of paramount importance.
Wilko has confirmed that team members will be paid if a team member has coronavirus or they have to self isolate. The extremely vulnerable category will be paid for the 12 week self isolation period. We would like this extended to the vulnerable category which includes those over 70, pregnant team members, those entitled to a flu jab etc.
Wilko has issued a key worker letter for team members to give to schools. We know that some members have experienced problems getting a place for their child/children in school. Please speak to your manager and let your GMB rep or regional organiser user know. If we can help, we will.
We have another conference call with management on the evening of Wednesday 25th March, social distancing measures, protecting team members and vulnerable workers will be key issues at this meeting.
If you have any issues, please contact your GMB rep or regional organiser.
GMB wants a safe working environment for all team members.
