2014 Pay Talks Update 18/11/14

 HAVE YOUR SAY ON PAY

Dear GMB members

In September when members were balloted on the 2014 Pay Offer, the National Negotiating Team were unable to fully share the Company’s trading position, which along with the proposed job losses and reduction in contract hours, was a key reason they felt unable to make a recommendation to members.

Consequently members voted 51%-49% to reject the offer and in subsequent talks GMB National Negotiating Team argued that the Company had to be more transparent with members and staff about the state of trading – the phrase “trading is difficult” was over-used and becoming meaningless to members without any more detailed information.

To their credit your National Reps have secured agreement to share the Company’s trading picture in order to provide members with a clearer picture of the current performance and put the Company offer in its proper context.

TRADING DIFFICULTIES

In 2013/14:

• sales were down 2.9% (6.8% in 2012/13) and;

• customers numbers were down 2.3% – compared to 1.6% for the “High St” as a whole;

On top of these figures, so far in 2014/15:

• sales are down a further 3%;

• customer numbers are down a further 4%;

• missing weekly sales targets by £2–£3m and;

• almost £42M behind budgeted turnover.

THE OFFER

1.5% uplift back dated to October 1st

Whilst the offer does not meet our full aspirations it is clear from the recent announcement of job losses at the Head Office and the trading figures above that the Company’s current financial position is very precarious, and that there are no further funds available for pay in 2014. The National Negotiating Team are recommending members vote to accept the offer.

HAVE YOUR SAY

It is now up to you, the members, to decide whether the offer is acceptable. A ballot form is provided with this letter, and only GMB members have the right to vote on the offer. All votes need to be received by midday on the 3rd December 2014 so that any backdated pay can be processed before Christmas.

YOU ARE URGED TO SUPPORT THE GMB NATIONAL NEGOTIATING TEAM’S RECOMMENDATION AND VOTE TO ACCEPT THE OFFER

Yours sincerely,

Eamon O’Hearn
